Bryce Harper and Mike Trout made their major league debuts on the same day in April.
Since then Harper has been a news magnet , Trout not so much.
So after a couple of weeks in the show, how are the two phenoms doing on the field?
BA | OBP | Slugging | PA | |
Mike Trout | .338 | .397 | .574 | 78 |
Bryce Harper | .246 | .338 | .449 | 80 |
Obviously this is a small sample size, but both are nearing 100 plate appearances.
We certainly cant draw any conclusions, but the numbers are interesting.
Updated Bryce Harper and Mike Trout Comparison
We have a bigger sampling size of statistics to draw from now as both Bryce Harper and Mike Trout are approaching 300 at-bats.
Trout and Harper were both selected for the All-Star game, and both players are legitimate candidates for the 2012 Rookie of the Year.
One thing we know for sure is that both players well help lead a new generation of superstars in the major leagues.
Let’s take a look at the numbers.
Mike Trout
Mike Trout’s slash line is as impressive as any veteran major leaguer, and he is 20 years old. 349/.403/.574 and carries with him and OPS of .077 .
Trout has third-best WAR 4.8 (Wins Above Replacement) in all of baseball.
He leads the American League in hitting, and stolen bases with 30. Trout has 41 RBI’s and play’s centerfield like he was born to play there.
“From when he came up to what he’s done now, you can’t ask more of a young player — you can’t ask more of a player at any age,” Scioscia said. “He’s playing with confidence. He just wants to play baseball, and he’ll let you guys talk about it.”
And so far Trout seems to be enjoying the ride, “It’s everything I thought it would be,” said Mike Trout, a young man who cannot wait for tomorrow.
Bryce Harper
Harper’s batting line is good , just not quite as good as Trout at this point. .273/.345/.454 and an OPS of .799 Harper has a WAR of 1.6 Harper has eight home runs and 25 RBI to go with 11 steals.
Harper is a high intensity, high energy player in everything that he does.
Whether it is running the bases, sprinting after flyballs or taking violent swings with the bat at the plate, he knows only one speed. All out.
Like Trout, Harper is cherishing his time in the major leagues. He seems unfazed under pressure and says that playing in the big leagues is not stressful. “It’s not stressful,” he said, chuckling. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.
I love this game like a little kid.”
We will be back to update our comparison later in the season. Until then we will just enjoy the show.
