Gio Gonzalez, Home Runs Lead Nationals to 13-2 Win over Mets

Nats NewsThe Washington Nationals exploded for 13 runs on Sunday, eight of which came in the final two innings of the game, in a 13-2 rout of the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Washington jumped out to an early lead, plating four runs in the second, highlighted by Adam LaRoche‘s solo homer and a pair of RBI doubles by Ian Desmond and Denard Span. Jayson Werth would add a solo shot of his own in the third to give the Nationals a 5-0 lead.

All the while, Washington starter Gio Gonzalez was dominant, working seven scoreless innings and surrendering just three hits, striking out seven and walking two.

Gonzalez would go on to register his fourth victory of the season, coming off of his last start that saw him garner just his third victory and first in nearly two months.

The Nationals would further open up the game in the eighth, which began on a Roger Bernadina ground rule double that scored Werth. Kurt Suzuki would go on to slug a two-run homer, highlighting a six-run inning that put the Nationals on top 11-0.

Ian Desmond would add a two-run shot of his own in the top of the ninth, capping the 13-run effort for the Nationals.

The Mets would try to stage a rally in the bottom of the ninth, as John Buck launched a two-run homer off of Ian Krol, but the effort would only muster two runs, as the Nationals would take the game 13-2 and the three-game series 2 games to 1.
