Yankees Close on Deal With Kelly Johnson

Yankees RumorsThe suddenly aggressive New York Yankees are close to an agreemen with free-agent Kelly Johnson on a one-year deal worth between $2.75 -$3 million. Johnson would serve a super utility role for the Bronx Bombers and add some insurance if indeed the team loses Robinson Cano.

Johnson could also see increased time at third base depending on the outcome of the Alex Rodriguez ruling.

Johnson, 31, has played for the Braves, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays and Rays during an eight-year career.

Johnson hit .235/.305/.410 with 16 home runs, 52 RBI, and seven stolen over 118 games with the Rays this past season while making starts between second base, third base, first base, and left field. Johnson’s best season was in 2010 with the Diamondbacks, when he hit .284 with a .370 OBP and a career-high 26 home runs and his left handed power should play well in Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees made a big splash signing yesterday when they agreed to terms with free-agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury on a deal worth $153 million over seven years.  Rumors persist that the team is involved  in simultaneous talks with several free agents including Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Beltran and of course Cano.

The team still maintains its commitment to bringing the total salary tab down to $189 million for 2014.
