The Detroit Tigers reached an agreement on a two-year deal with the top free-agent closer on the market, Joe Nathan, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.
Nathan had been seeking a multiyear deal worth at least $10 million per season and turned down a $9 million option with the Texas Rangers to become a free agent.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Nathan has been an elite closer since his breakout season with the Minnesota Twins in 2004 and recorded 43 saves in 2013 was fourth best in the AL, posting a 1.39 ERA in 64 2/3 innings in 2013 with the Rangers in 2013.
The Tigers have been one of MLB’s most active teams this off-season having traded first baseman Prince Fielder and starter Doug Fister.
With Nathan off the market expect a run on free-agent relievers in the coming days. Grant Balfour, Fernando Rodney,Joaquin Benoit, Edward Mujica, Jose Veras, Kevin Gregg, Chris Perez all have closing experience.
Brian Wilson is reportedly close to rejoining the Los Angeles Dodgers.
