The case for signing free agent pitcher Kyle Lohse got a little better today when Texas Rangers left-hander Martin Perez suffered a broken ulna in his left forearm when he was struck by a line drive during the sixth inning of Sunday’s 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
Perez Will not resume throwing for approximately 4 weeks. “I didn’t see where it hit him. He was on the ground and I just ran out to see him,” manager Ron Washington said after the game. “He got hit pretty hard.”
Perez had been competing for the number five spot in the Texas rotation. Texas has maintained contact with Scott Boras who represents Lohse. Lohse is 34 years old and had a career year in St. Louis in 2012 going 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA, and has drawn little interest this off-season after turning down a qualifying offer from the St. Louis Cardinals.Texas still has Matt Harrison, Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, Alexi Ogando, and Colby Lewis in the rotation to start the season.
