Rays To Add Tim Beckham, Jake Odorizzi, Freddy Guzman

Tampa Bay rays newsThe Tampa Bay Rays have added Tim Beckham , the top pick in the 2008 draft, to the major league roster for the final 12 days of the season. He hit .276 with a .342 on-base percentage for the Durham Bulls this year while helping them to the International League title. Beckham is not likely to see much action.

The team also recalled Jake Odorizzi,  who is back for his third stint with the big club. He has pitched in five games, making four starts. He is 0-1 with a 5.09 ERA. Odorizzi started the Triple-A national championship game Tuesday. He allowed one run over four innings with eight strikeouts in the Bulls’ 2-1 loss to Omaha.

Odorizzi could be called upon to replace Jeremy Hellickson in the rotation who was ineffective in his start against the Texas Rangers in a 7-1 loss on Tuesday.

Looking for speed off the bench the Rays added OF Freddy Guzman to the roster. Guzman has been on a Minor League contract with Tampa Bay since Aug. 30. He has not played in a Major League game since 2009 with the Yankees. Coincidentally, the last game he played in came at Tropicana Field (Oct. 4, 2009)

To make room on the 40-man roster for Guzman, the Rays transferred outfielder Brandon Guyer to the 60-day disabled list
