Matt Holliday Going On St. Louis Disabled List

The St. Louis Cardinals will do something that has become all too familiar for the team: Place their 11th player on the disabled list since the beginning of July.

On Friday, x-rays confirmed Matt Holliday had suffered a fracture of the right thumb. On Thursday, Holliday was hit during the 10th inning with a 94-mph pitch from Mike Montgomery in a game in which the Cardinals eventually lost 4-3.

Holliday’s right thumb swelled immediately and he was not able to move it. He was replaced at once with a pinch runner and sent to the training area for x-rays.

The x-rays revealed the fracture of which they will know the severity of this weekend after Holliday is able to visit the hand specialist of the club.

Holliday said that high and tight pitches affect seasons, and he added that he was very disappointed to be hurt, but unfortunately, it is part of our sport.

When asked if he was worried that his season might have ended he said he doubted that it was over.

The Thursday night scene was similar to one on July 31 when the Cardinals played Miami and Aledmys Diaz the Cardinals rookie shortstop was hit by a fastball from Andrew Cashner on his right thumb.

Diaz’s finger was fractured and he is not expected to return to play until September.

Diaz is one of 9 Cardinals players on the DL and none are expected to be back until the latter part of August and possibly even later.

Mike Matheny the St. Louis manager said you want your top players always around, but the team has young, talented players who are ready to step in and do the job needed to win.

Holliday was hit by a pitch for the eighth time this season and the second time over the past three weeks he was required to leave the game due to the hit by pitch.

Cashner hit Holliday in the face with a pitch on July 21, but Holliday was able to return to the Cardinals lineup the following day, but not this time.

Joe Maddon the manager of the Cubs called the incident awful and added that he felt horrible about the incident, as Holliday is such an important player for the team.
