NL Scores: Gonzalez Leads Nats, Halladay Rocked, Harvey K’s 10

Nats NewsGio Gonzalez  hit his second career home run and tossed six shutout innings to help the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 3-0. Gonzalez (1-0), a 21-game winner in 2012 who finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting, allowed only two hits, along with five strikeouts and two walks.  It was the second consecutive shutout for Washington.  Stephen Strasburg shut out Miami on opening day.

Atlanta 9 – Philadelphia 2 –  Roy Halladay struck out nine Atlanta Braves in 3 1/3 innings, but along the way gave up five runs and six hits.  Craig Heyward, Justin Upton, and Evan Gattis  all homered for Atlanta.  Freddie Freeman drove in three runs with three hits.

New York 8-San Diego 4 –  Matt Harvey struck out 10 San Diego Padres and threw  seven shutout innings and the Mets used three homers to beat the San Diego Padres 8-4.  Lucas Duda, John Buck and Ike Davis all hit home runs off of San Diego starter Clayton Richard.  David Wright added an RBI double.

Pittsburgh 3 – Chicago –  Wandy Rodriguez allowed just two hits over 6 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out six and Andrew McCutchen smacked an RBI double for the Pirates to a  3-0 when over the Cubs. Starling Marte and Gaby Sanchez also drove in a run. Edwin Jackson gave up two runs in five innings but lost to the Pirates for the first time in seven career starts.

Colorado 7-Milwaukee 3 Juan Nicasio  gave the Rockies six solid innings and and Wilin Rosario,Michael Cuddyer and Dexter Fowler homered to lift the Rockies over the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3.  Rickie Weeks had three hits including his first homerun of the season.

Arizona 10-  St. Louis 9 Cliff Pennington‘s base hit in the bottom of the 16th score Jason Kubel from second and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9.  The game lasted five hours and 32 minutes. Paul Goldschmidt and Martin Prado each hit a two-run homer, and Gerardo Parra homered, tripled and singled for the Diamondbacks. Arizona’s Brandon McCarthy allowed six runs on nine hits in five-plus innings in his first outing  Suffering a head injury on September 5. Lance Lynn, an 18-game winner last season, had a 4-1 lead after four but never got an out in the fifth.

San Francisco 5 – Los Angeles 3  Tim Lincecum got through five innings  allowing seven walks, three hits and two runs both unearned to be Josh Beckett and the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3.  Pablo Sandoval  at a two run home run in the third inning and Sergio Romo earned his second save of the season.  Beckett turned in six innings allowing three earned runs and  struck out four.  Carl Crawford collected three more hits for the Dodgers.
