Alex Cobb, Rays Shut Down Indians, Advance To ALDS

Rays NewsTampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball and Joel Peralta, Jake McGee and Fernando Rodney combined to finish the shutout 4-0 over the Cleveland Indians in the American League Wild Card game.

In two starts against Cleveland this year, Cobb gave up a combined 12 hits in 14 scoreless innings. The combined shutout was the 18th shutout of the season for the Tampa Bay pitching staff

Tampa Bay will now move on to the American League Division Series against AL East rival, Boston Red Sox.

Delmon Young homered in the third inning off rookie Danny Salazar and Desmond Jennings added a two out two RBI single in the fourth to go ahead 3-0.

Yunel Escobar singled in the ninth to add an insurance run ahead a Rodney’s perfect ninth inning.

In 22 regular-season starts in 2013, Cobb went 11-3 with a 2.76 ERA. In 33 regular-season starts since Aug. 1, 2012, he is 18-4 with a 2.87 ERA.
