Padres Chase Headley Out For a Month With Broken Thumb

Padres NewsChase Headley  will miss at least a month,  the result of breaking the tip of his left thumb while sliding into second base on Sunday trying to break up a double play. The injury is not likely to require surgery and will need about a month to heal.

“Injuries occur. You hate to see it happen, but it’s the nature of a physical sport like baseball,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “It’s unfortunate for Chase and the entire Padres organization.”

Headley hit .286 with 31 homers and 115 RBIs last year, when he won a Gold Glove and finished fifth in NL MVP voting. Headley set a franchise record last season by reaching base safely in 146 games, eclipsing the previous mark of 144 set by Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn in 1987.

While Headley  recovers the Padres have two in-house options they could use at third base: Logan Forsythe and Jedd Gyorko. “There’s a lot of options,” Black said.
