Phillies Pick Up 2013 Option for Ruiz – Decline Polanco, Contreras, Wigginton

Philadelphia Phillies news

Ruiz hit .325/.394/.540 with 16 home runs and 68 RBI

As expected, the Philadelphia Phillies picked up to 2013 option on the contract of All-Star catcher Carlos Ruiz. Ruiz hit .325/.394/.540 with 16 home runs and 68 RBI in 421 plate appearances this season while playing exceptional defense behind the plate. Ruiz learn $5 million in 2013

Additionally, the Phillies declined contract options on pitcher Jose Contreras, infielder Ty Wigginton and third baseman Placido Polanco. Contrearas will be bought out for $500,000. Contrearas was limited to 17 games in 2012 going 1-0 with a 5.27 ERA.

Wiggington had a $4 million option on his deal and was bought out for $500,000. Wiggington hit .235 with 11 homers, 11 doubles and 43 RBI in 125 games in 2012.  Finding a place for Wigginton would be tough with Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr, and Darin Ruf all returning

The club declined Polanco’s $5.5 million option for 2013. He’ll receive a $1 million buyout instead. The Phillies will go with Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen at third-base next season. Chase Utley is expected to remain at second base.
