BBWAA Awards: Rays Myers, Archer Finalists For AL ROY

Rays NewsThe annual Baseball Writers’ Association of America, BBWAA awards finalists were announced and the Tampa Bay Rays have two finalists for the American League Rookie of the Year. Chris Archer and Wil Myers were named along with Detroit Tigers infielder Jose Iglesias.

Awards will be announced next week with daily announcement shows at 6 p.m. ET on MLB Network, beginning with Rookie of the Year awards on Monday, Managers of the Year on Nov. 12, Cy Youngs on Nov. 13 and MVPs on Nov. 14.

The finalists are as follows

AL MVP: Miguel CabreraChris DavisMike Trout

Trout had a year that rivaled his rookie runner-up season last year , but its likely Trout will come up short again in 2013. Cabrera has a chance to win back-to-back MVP’s, but its hard to overlook Davis who led the majors with 53 homers, 138 RBIs and 370 total bases, and was a Gold Glove finalist at first base.

NL MVP: Paul GoldschmidtAndrew McCutchenYadier Molina

Goldschmidt, the winner of the NL Hank Aaron Award, might have had the best stats — leading the NL in RBIs by a margin of 16 with 125 and matching Pittsburgh’s Pedro Alvarez with 36 homers. McCutchen, meanwhile, led the Pirates to their first postseason appearance since 1992

AL Cy YoungYu DarvishHisashi IwakumaMax Scherzer

Scherzer posted 21-3 record and was among the AL leaders with a 2.90 ERA and for the most part the Cy Young is a wins dominated category,

NL Cy Young: Jose FernandezClayton KershawAdam Wainwright

Kershaw postsed a 1.83 ERA and 0.92 WHIP, while Fernandez had 2.19 ERA in 28 starts and allowed a Majors-low .182 opponents’ batting average. Wainwright was rock solid for the Cardinals.

AL Manager of the Year: John Farrell, Terry Francona, Bob Melvin

Farrell is going to get a lot of votes and he deserves them after leading a worst to first finsh in Boston, but former Red Sox skipper Terry Francona is my dark horse getting the Indians to a wild card playoff game in his first season in Cleveland.

NL Manager of the Year: Fredi Gonzalez, Clint Hurdle, Don Mattingly

Clint Hurdle led the Pirates to their first post seson appearance in 20 years , thats enough to give it to him.

AL Rookie of the Year: Chris ArcherJose IglesiasWil Myers

Myers has been the Rookie of the Year “elect” since being traded to Tampa Bay last winter. Archer’s case was slowed by a late season slump. Iglesias made the Tigers look smart with solid rookie campaign coming over from Boston in a mid-sumer trade.

NL Rookie of the Year: Jose FernandezShelby MillerYasiel Puig

Puig was the hot topic all summer, but its Frenandez who really stood out among the rookie class in the National League for 2013 . Miller went 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA in 31 starts.
