Zack Greinke Traded To Angels For Jean Segura and Prospects

Brewers NewsThe Milwaukee Brewers finally traded Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels for shortstop Jean Segura and two AA pitchers,  John Hellweg and Ariel Pena. The Angels will owe Greinke $5.15 million for the remainder of this season.

According to sources, Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto feels like the Angels have a good shot at re-signing Greinke.

Greinke was offered a contract extension by the Brewers, reportedly in the range of five years and $100 million but were unable to come to an agreement.

Greinke now returns to the American League where he enjoyed much success. He was the AL’s best pitcher in 2009, going 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA for the Royals.

The Brewers decided earlier this week that a trade was inevitable, and began fielding offers. Now with Greinke off the trading block, other teams in search of pitching, the Rangers, Blue Jays, Dodgers and Braves may look to Josh Johnson of the Marlins, or James Shields of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Jean Segura was hitting .294/.346/.404 with seven homers, 40 RBI and 33 stolen bases at AA it’s Arkansas and was a key factor in the trade.

Ariel Pena  has posted a 6-6 record, 2.99 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 111/42 K/BB ratio over 19 starts spanning 114 1/3 innings for Double-A Arkansas this season

John Hellweg has compiled a 5-10 record, 3.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 88/60 K/BB ratio, at AA Arkansas.

Baseball America ranks Johnny Hellweg as the Angels No. 4 prospect and Ariel Pena at No. 9
