Joel Hanrahan To Have Season-Ending Surgery

Red Sox NewsBoston Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan will undergo season ending surgery to repair his right flexor tendon.  The surgery essentially ends  Hanrahan’s career in Boston whose one-year deal worth $7.04 million expires at the end of the year.

Hanrahan struggled early on as Boston’s closer and ended with a 9.82 ERA a 2.18 WHIP  in nine appearances.  The two-time All-Star has pitched for seven seasons in the major leagues.

Hanrahan may undergo Tommy John surgery but that has yet to be determined.  If so Hanrahan would be out much longer than the 6 to 9 month period for recovering from flexor tendon surgery.  Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure and make the determination at that time.

Fantasy Play:  It’s not likely you still have Hanrahan on your roster but if you do cut him loose.  Andrew Bailey has been on the DL since late April with biceps inflammation and  right-hander Junichi Tazawa will likely continue  getting most of the save opportunities for the Red Sox.
