Jean Segura Making Case For New Deal With Brewers Stronger

Milwaukee Brewers newsJean Segura went into Tuesday’s game with the Pittsburgh Pirates hitting .368,  with 6 home runs,16 RBI in 13 stolen bases. Segura went 1-for-6  with a home run.  The Milwaukee Brewers have approached Segura about a long-term deal a month ago and while a deal isn’t imminent , at this rate the Brewers may want to accelerate the talks.

Over the first 36 games of this season Segura  has amassed 50 hits, including 17 multi-hit games and is tied in the National League lead  four triples with three.

He ranks third in on-base percentage at .412, fourth in total bases with 80 and fifth with a .588 slugging percentage and 1.000 OPS.

In other words, the price for Segura’s services isn’t likely to go down. Segura is making $492,000 this season, which is just over the league minimum.

Segura  was acquired as part of the trade with the Los Angeles Angels last July.

“What you see from him this year, he’s doing everything right,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. “We didn’t see that player last year. This is a great player, this is a guy that I don’t want to ever take him out of the lineup. I keep talking about I want to get him a day off and he plays so well I can’t take him out, and he doesn’t want out. He’s one of the best players in the league.”

That’s high praise for young shortstop in his first full season of major league baseball.  For comparison Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro signed a seven-year $60 million extension last August. Segura’s deal  would likely  surpassed that.
