With David Ortiz due back perhaps as early as Friday rookie outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. will likely the option to the minor leagues. Bradley has missed four out of the last seven games for the Red Sox essentially due to poor performance. Bradley is hitless in his last 20 at-bats with 10 strikeouts and for the season is 3 for 31. Bradley seems to be taking the pending assignment in stride.
“I’m taking it day by day. It’s a learning process,” Bradley said. “Keep working and my time will come. “It’s still early in the season. I’m not going to let this — 30 at-bats or whatever — define me. . . . . This isn’t how my career is going to turn out.”
“If I happen to go down, I’ll know I sucked my first go-around but I’ll be looking forward to the next time I get the chance,” Bradley said.
Bradley was outstanding during the spring, 419 BA with a .507 on-base percentage but has looked overmatched at the major-league level 5-for-38 (.097), but as the young outfielder is finding out making the jump from Double-A to the major leagues is difficult for an everyday player.
