Mookie Betts Leading For Last Spot in American League Outfield

Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts moved into the lead for the third spot in the outfield of the American League for the All-Star Game. At the same time, Jose Bautista from the Toronto Blue Jays is making a big move up the board as well despite being placed on the disabled list due to a big toe injury on his right foot.

Mike Trout leads outfielders in voting for the American League. The Angels outfielder has over 2.3 million votes, while Boston’s Jackie Bradley Jr. is in second with over 1.7 million. The two have been joined by Red Sox outfielder Betts who know has 1.4 million votes.

There are just eight days remaining for voting before the All-Star voting is close prior to the big game, which is scheduled for July 12 in San Diego at Petco Park.

The finish of the balloting for the outfield in the American League could prove to be very compelling.

In the past week, Trout has received over 500,000 votes, Bradley Jr. more than 400,000 and Betts over 365,000. At the same time, Bautista has received more than 345,000, Baltimore’s Mark Trumbo over 297,000 and Kansas City’s Lorenzo Cain over 256,000.

KC’s Cain not only dropped out of the third and final starting position in the outfield for only the first time in a month, but also dropped behind Baltimore’s Trumbo who is in fourth.

The overall top vote getter in the AL is Kansas City’s Salvador Perez at catcher with more than 2.7 million votes.

Other leaders by position include the Royals’ Eric Hosmer at first base with 2.0 million votes, Jose Altuve at second base from Houston with 1.6 million, Manny Machado at third base from Baltimore with 1.6 million, Xander Bogaerts at short from Boston with 2.1 million and David Ortiz at DH from Boston with 2.6 million.

This will be the 10th and the last selection for Ortiz as he has said he will retire at season’s end.

Fans are able to cast ballots for AL starters at the 30 online sites for each club as well as on MLB.com the official site for Major League Baseball.

Betts is playing very well for Boston and his fans are supporting him. Their votes have propelled him to third and now all he needs to do is continue his fine play and the votes will continue to roll in.

Voting closes on June 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The National League will update it All-Star voting later on Wednesday afternoon.
