Bell, Young, Cabrera and Pennington have been traded
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired RHP Heath Bell and cash considerations form the Miami Marlins . In turn the D’Backs sent OF Chris Young to the Oakland Athletics for INFs Cliff Pennington and Yordy Cabrera. The A’s then sent Cabrera to complete the three-way trade.
Bell became a source of controversy in Miami after signing three-year, $27 million free-agent deal with the Marlins and publicly feuding with Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen. Bell’s contract calls for salaries of $9 million in 2013 and ’14, and his $9 million option for ’15 becomes guaranteed if he finishes 55 games in ’14 or combines to finish 100 games between ’13-14.
Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports that the Diamondbacks will cover $13 million of the $21 million remaining on Bell’s contract.
Young has played for Oakland manager Bob Melvin in Arizona. The two are said to be close. Young is owed $8.5 million in 2013, and there is an $11 million club option for ’14 that includes a $1.5 million buyout. Young joins an A’s outfield of Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Reddick, and Coco Crisp
Pennington, 28, will step in and add depth at shortstop with the departure of Stephen Drew, who was dealt to the A’s in August. Drew is now a fee-agent.
Cabrera is a prospect drafted by the A’s in the second round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft. he spent 2012 in Stockton (Class A ) and hit .230/.297/.351. The Marlins have been unloading high priced players since the mid-summer and this trade fits that profile.
