Cardinals rallied for four runs with two outs in the ninth
The St. Louis Cardinals rallied from a six run deficit, including a four-run ninth to stun the Washington Nationals 9-7 to win the NLDS and advance to the National League Championship Series against the San Francisco Giants. It was the largest comeback ever in a winner-take-all postseason game, according to STATS LLC.
St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright did not make it out of the third inning giving up six earned runs on seven hits, including three home runs. Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Michael Morse all homered before the third inning was complete just take Washington to a 6-0 lead. Cy Young candidate Gio Gonzalez pitched five innings for Washington allowing three earned runs and striking out five. He walked four batters.
The Nationals added an insurance run in the eighth inning and turned the game over to Drew Storen with a two run lead in the ninth. Carlos Beltran doubled to begin the inning, and Yadier Molina was on second with two outs and two strikes on David Freese.
Freese would eventually walk. With the bases loaded Descalso singled to shallow center field to score Beltran and pinch runner Adron Chambers to tie the game.
Pete Kozma then singled to right to score Freese and Descalso and the comeback was complete.
The Cardinals took a 9-7 lead to the bottom of the ninth inning. Jayson Werth flied out to right field, Harper struck out swinging, and Zimmerman popped out to second base and the Cardinals were headed to the NLCS.
