Werth homers on 13th pitch of at-bat

Jayson Werth him him lead off the bottom of the ninth inning with a game-winning solo home run to lift the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 victory over the defending world champion St. Louis Cardinals in game four of the NLDS. It was only the third hit of the game for the Nationals.

Adam LaRoche had homered to center field in the second to stake Washington to a 1-0 lead. Carlos Beltran hit sacrifice fly to center field scoring Pete Kozma to tie the game at one in the third inning. The game remained tied until Werth’s blast in the ninth inning.

Ross Detwiler pitched six innings for Washington allowing one run that was unearned and striking out two.

Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse was effective in seven innings of work allowing one earned run and striking out five. Game five will be played Friday with Adam Wainwright starting for the Cardinals Gio Gonzalez starting for Washington
