Verlander dominated the A’s in Game 1

Justin Verlander gave up a leadoff home run to Oakland A’s outfielder Coco Crisp, but settled down to give the Tigers seven strong innings, while striking out 11 and Detroit beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 in Game One of the ALDS.

Joaquin Benoit pitched the eighth and Jose Valverde the ninth-inning for the safe and to preserve the victory.

Oakland would muster only four hits against Tigers pitching on the night. Jarrod Parker pitched into the seventh inning for Oakland allowing three runs, two earned and striking out five. Alex Avila hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for Detroit. Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera went hitless.

Game 2 is Sunday, with Doug Fister taking the mound for Detroit and left-hander Tommy Milone for Oakland.
