Pirates Place Starling Marte on DL – Recall Tabata

Pittsburgh Pirates News

In 23 games Marte is batting, .252/.287/.421 with an OPS of .708.

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed rookie outfielder Starling Marte on the 15 day disabled list with a right oblique strain. Marte was recalled by the Pirates in late July. In 23 games Marte is batting,  .252/.287/.421 with an OPS of .708.  Marte has hit four home runs and has four stolen bases.

Oblique injuries are slow to heal, so a minimum stay on the disabled list seems unlikely.

In a corresponding move the team recalled Jose Tabata from AAA Indianapolis. Tabata has hit .297/.353/.354 with no homers and five steals in 41 games with Indianapolis.

The Pirates are 6 1/2 games behind the National League Central Division leading Cincinnati Reds, but remain tied with the Atlanta Braves for a wildcard spot in the National League.

After reaching a season best 16 games over 500 in August, the Pirates are 7-10 this month.

The Pirates made several trade deadline deals, including adding Wandy Rodriguez, Gaby Sanchez, Travis Snider and Chad Qualls to help bolster the teams stretch run. The Pirates have not had a winning season in 19 years, and while that streak is likely to come to an end, reaching the playoffs may prove to be more difficult.

The Pirates are currently 66-54
