Red Sox Vicente Padilla Placed on DL

Red Sox NewsThe Red Sox placed RHP Vicente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 6, with a right biceps strain and recalled RHP Clayton Mortensen from Triple-A Pawtucket in the corresponding move.

Padilla has a 4.62 ERA and 43/11 K/BB ratio over 39 innings for the Red Sox this season. Padilla has allowed seven earned runs on six hits in his past three innings, including a blown save in New York. Padilla has pitched in 41 games for the Red Sox, his most in a season since he made 51 appearances in 2000.

Mortensen has brief appearances for the Red Sox this season and has a 1.17 ERA in 23.0 innings with 17 strikeouts.

Mortensen is a former first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals (2007) manager Bobby Valentine added, “He’s risen to the occasion, and he’s throwing as well in Triple A, so it’s not like he’s getting lucky. He’s a pretty good pitcher. Throws different pitches, and he says he’s ready to go.” Boston.com
