Cubs’ Matt Garza Likely Headed to DL

matt garza cubsIf it were up to Matt Garzahe would probably make his next start on Tuesday. That air of invincibility is one of the things that baseball people like about Garza. team officials may have other plans for Garza.

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, Garza is likely headed to the DL. Garza was sent back home after his throwing arm stiffened up a bit during his recent bullpen session.

Garza are will undergo further evaluation on Monday.  Garza hasn’t pitched since July 21 when he was removed from his start with cramping in his right triceps.

Casey Coleman would likely be called up to take Garza;s in the rotation.

Garza had been the subject of many trade rumors prior to his arm troubles. Garza could still be traded in August, however things are going to want to know that he is healthy and ready to pitch. Garza is a valuable commodity and the Cubs are not willing to risk further injury at this point.

The Cubs have been very active in reshaping their roster with trades this summer.

Cubs president Theo Epstein has traded  Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm, outfielder Reed Johnson and catcher Geovany Soto.

Alfonso Soriano is another likely candidate to be moved by the end of the month.

The Cubs are committed to calling up young prospects and trading off veteran players for more prospects.
