Yankees Mark Teixeira Has Wrist Inflammation – Avoids DL for Now

New York Yankees NewsThe New York Yankees got some good news when an MRI revealed no structural damage to the left wrist a first baseman Mark Teixeira. Teixeira was given a cortisone shot and will be reevaluated in three days and will avoid the DL for the time being.

Teixeira has hit 20 home runs and has 71 RBI this season. while his batting average is .256 Teixeira did hit .298 in July with 27 RBI in 24 games.

“I’d love to be able to get here early on Friday and swing a bat and be able to tell (manager) Joe (Girardi) that I can play, but we’ll see,” Teixeira said. “We’re going to take it easy the next couple days, just treat it, and then we’ll see where we are on Friday.” NYDaily News

Teixeira has a history with this type of injury. In 2009, his wrist was injured, and received a cortisone shot then as well. He was fine after a few days rest.

With Alex Rodriguez on the DL, and Teixeira not able to play, the Yankees are without their two premier corner men.

Yesterday the Yankees traded Chad Qualls for Casey McGehee to help until Rodriguez and Teixeira can return.

Outfielder and designated hitter Nick Swisher was penciled in at first base last night and is expected to see more playing time there.  Swisher was returning from a few days off with a strained hip flexor.

The Yankees have lost four games in a row, and five of their last seven, but still maintain a 5 1/2 game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.

Along with Teixeira and Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano have been leading the Yankees in hitting since the All-Star break. Curtis Granderson has five home runs since the break
