Brewers GM Doug Melvin: Greinke Will Be Traded

Zack Greinke Milwaukee Brewers NewsWith Cole Hamels officially off the market, teams looking to add pitching before the deadline are intensifying their pursuit. More often than not general managers are often coy and evasive about deals they are working on, or confirming or denying rumors. Not for Brewers general manager Doug Melvin.

He told Bob Nightingale, of the USA Today, Greinke could handle pitching in a large market.“There are so many good things about him, it’s going to be difficult when we trade him,”

So the question is no longer if he will be traded, but when and to whom. The Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays are all looking for starting pitching and Greinke is clearly the best option available via a trade.

That being said, teams won’t be getting a bargain if they decide to pull the trigger. “At this point we have to listen to opportunities to improve the ball club for the future and still try to win ball games now,” Melvin said.

Translation;  Melvin is looking for a package of players, including prospects and major league ready players.

The Brewers likely would be interested in anyone who could offer them major league ready pitching in return. They also covet a shortstop prospect. With the news out officially that Melvin is ready to deal, a trade for Greinke could happen at any time.
