Justin Verlander will start for the American League in Tuesday’s All-Star game in Kansas City.
Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington, who will manage the American League, had a number of deserving candidates start the game.
The American League roster is anchored by Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox, David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays, and Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels.
Verlander probably would have gotten the start and last year’s All-Star game, however the reigning Cy Young and MVP winner at pitched on the Sunday prior to the All-Star game and was unavailable. When asked about the possibility of starting the All-Star game, Verlander replied,
“It would be fantastic, but I know there are some other guys out there having exceptional years,” Verlander said after that game. “I’d like to have that on my resume, but you aren’t owed anything in this game. I’m not the only guy having a good season.”
While fans in Tampa Bay, Los Angeles or Chicago may be disappointed, it’s hard to argue that Verlander shouldn’t be the starter. That’s what All-Star games and All-Star rosters are all about. All the players are worthy.
